This term our key learning area is TECHNOLOGY and you can follow our learning journey here.
We are learning:
- that needs and opportunities are often identified by questioning common, everyday issues and looking for simple solutions;
- that teams of people with different capabilities and talents can work together to form great ideas;
- that it helps to be imaginative and creative when considering solutions to needs and opportunities.
BIG QUESTION
Can I find a solution to a small problem and in the process, make some money?
We think we've found a small problem that needs a solution.
We have recently been replanting our vegetable garden. We brainstormed ideas about what vegetables we could grow. During our brainstorm two words generated some discussion – YUCKY and YUMMY. We think we may have found a small problem that needs a solution. Following our brainstorm we grouped our ideas. We also started some market research. We needed to know if there was a problem. Our research showed us there is a problem. 25% of Halcombe School student’s don’t like vegetables.

We thought it was time to share some of our learning with our school community. Here is our item from Friday 20th August's assembly.
Eat Your Peas from Fiona Hunter on Vimeo.
Room 4 students are becoming master chefs. We have created a hummus recipe and we've named it the 'Dunk & Dip'. This week we tested it on 5 Halcombe School Students. These students completed our survey and they told us they didn't like vegetables. So much for that - they ate the whole platter.
One comment - "This is actually really good."
We didn't even have to bribe them with our cheesecake!

3 September
Today was our main production day. We wanted to make 100 cheesecakes. We didn't quite achieve this, but everyone worked really hard. We didn't even get a full hour for lunch! Owning your own business isn't easy.
10 September

We had market day on Thursday night and what a night! We enjoyed sharing our learning with our parents and other visitors before opening our stall for business. When the selling started we were run off our feet. Everyone was buying cheesecakes and we were amazed at how fast they were selling. Before we knew it one chillybin was empty.
We had four flavours to sell - raspberry and white chocolate, ambrosia, peach and passionfruit and gummy bear and eskimo. We had to be pretty good with our maths, because some people bought lots of cheesecakes and then we had to work out their change too. We appreciated everyone's patience, because it got a bit hectic and we forgot to give one customer her change, but we got it sorted in the end. We also gave another customer her change and her money back too, but she was very honest and we appreciated that.
We'd marketed our product well and we were confident it would sell. And it did. We sold out of cheesecake and 'Dunk & Dip.' and unfortunately some people missed out.
Our comments about our learning will be available here shortly.
We hope you all enjoyed your cheesecake and 'Dunk & Dip.' We'd love to hear your comments too.
